REMEMBERING BEN COHEN Vol.2
ARTIST: BEN COHEN with THE SONNY DEE ALL-STARS AND LAURIE CHESCOE’S GOODTIME JAZZ
CD DESCRIPTION:Ben Cohen, one of the legendary ‘backroom boys’ of British Traditional Jazz, spent his whole career in amateur or semi-professional bands, but was widely regarded as one of the best exponents of the early Louis Armstrong style of playing. He stuck doggedly to the cornet rather than the trumpet and was well-known for his blistering, but always tasteful, thoughtful solos and firm lead. After we released Vol.1 (LACD334) we had a number of queries as to whether there were any more recordings by Ben which we could issue. We had an album of Ben with The Sonny Dee All-Stars which had never been issued on CD. The All-Stars was a Chicago-style band led by drummer Stan Daly (‘Sonny Dee’) featuring some topnotch players. It sees Ben away from his beloved Armstrong style and delving into the realms of Wild Bill Davison. Again, Ben demonstrates that he was no ‘one-trick’ player and leads superbly throughout. A review of the original album in Hot Jazz Today magazine said “It basically swings like the clappers and is, therefore, highly recommended”. The CD playing time is made up with three tracks from Laurie Chescoe’s excellent band which Ben led for a while.
